Sky Sports understands Mixu Paatelainen has agreed to become the next manager of Dundee United.

The former Hibernian and Kilmarnock boss, who has been out of work since his sacking as Finland national coach in the summer, replaces Jackie McNamara who was fired last month after taking just five points from the opening nine matches of the season.

Paatelainen, 48, made his name in Scotland as a player during a five-year spell with Dundee United between 1987 and 1992.

The Finn also played for Aberdeen, St Johnstone and St Mirren, as well as two spells with Hibernian where he became a firm favourite of the Easter Road fans.

St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright says it is good for Scotland that Inverness and Falkirk are heading to Hampden in May

Paatelainen, who is in United's Hall of Fame, is understood to have been on a shortlist which included Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager John Hughes and St Johnstone counterpart Tommy Wright.
